Make Your Laptop Battery Last Longer: 3 Tips

Does your laptop battery give out a lot sooner than it used to? Are you lucky to get an hour or two of work done before you need to start searching for an AC outlet? Sounds like it's time to think about replacing the battery.(asus k53sv battery asus a53sv battery)

Get reader for sticker shock: laptop batteries are expensive. Prices vary from one model to another, but it's not uncommon for new power packs to sell for $100 or more. I've seen some as high as $150. When you consider that brand-new laptops now sell for as low as $300, that can be a tough pill to swallow.

Whether you’re already in the market for a replacement battery or just concerned about the inevitable day when you will be, here are three things you should know:

1. Most laptop batteries start to fail in 1-2 years. This varies depending on your usage, of course, but the average laptop battery is good for around 400 recharges (a.k.a. cycles). After that, it starts to lose its capacity to hold a charge.(87-M54GS-4D31 AA-PB2VC6B)

That’s why the battery that once gave you, say, 3-4 hours’ worth of runtime now peters out after just 1-2 hours. And after a few years, you might be lucky to get an even an hour.

2. You can extend the life of your current battery. If you use your laptop as your primary desktop PC, you may be wasting battery cycles by leaving it plugged in all the time.

The solution: pop the battery out until you actually need to go somewhere with your laptop. As long as the latter is plugged into an AC outlet, it doesn’t actually need the battery.( asus k53t battery asus a43 battery)

Trust me on this: I’ve seen fairly new batteries that could barely last half an hour, even though the laptop rarely went anywhere. When in doubt, pop it out.

3. Investigate third-party alternatives. When you do end up needing a replacement battery, you don’t necessarily have to buy one from the laptop manufacturer--paying top dollar in the process. (asus a43sj battery AA-PL2VC6W/E)

Instead, search the Web for the laptop make/model and "battery" to see if there are less-expensive third-party options. If your system is a popular model, there almost certainly will be.(asus a43s battery asus k43s battery)

These replacement batteries--available for a huge range of laptop models--promise 800 recharge cycles (meaning they should last twice as long as your current battery) and come with a two-year warranty. Plus, they’re priced fairly competitively at $88 and up.

By the way, you should always, always, always recycle old laptop batteries. Stores like Best Buy, Lowe’s, and Staples have bins or kiosks where you can drop them off.(asus k43u battery asus k43sj battery)

Okay, your turn: Have you shopped for a replacement laptop battery? If so, how much did you pay? Were you able to find any cheaper alternatives?

New iPad's battery life (nearly) the same as the old iPad's

Apple claims the larger battery found in the new iPad will go a long way toward compensating for the tablet's dramatically increased pixel count. This weekend I got the chance to put the battery's compensation to the asus k43e battery test.

It took the better part of my day to get to that 10 percent point. Damn long-lasting tablets.

Over the last couple of days I've run CNET's tablet battery drain test on both the asus a53s battery new iPad and the iPad 2. The iPad 2's battery life hadn't been tested since iOS 4.3, so while my focus was on asus k53u battery evaluating the new iPad's battery, this was also an opportunity to see if iOS 5.1 brought any battery life improvements over 4.3.

The results

The results speak for themselves, but if you need further explanation, continue reading after the chart.

iPad (2012) iPad 2 (iOS 5.1) iPad 2 (iOS 4.3) Transformer Prime Transformer Prime w/keyboard dock

Movie battery life (in hours) 12.8 14.2 11.9 9.6 15.3

How we tested battery life

We evaluated battery life the same way we do for all tablets: by continually running a movie file on the iPad until its battery dies.

We set each tablet to Airplane mode and asus k53sj battery adjusted its respective brightnesses to 150 candelas per square meter (cd/m2) or as close to that number as possible. For each iPad, that's a AA-PB2VC6W bit lower than the halfway mark on the brightness scale.

We ran the 720p iPad version of "Toy Story 3." On the Transformer Prime, we ran a 720p version of "Toy Story 3." The new iPad also supports 1080p playback of movies, but we've yet to run the battery test with a movie file at that resolution.

On the iPads, we ran the movie through the asus k53sc battery Videos app; for the Prime, we used the movie player app mVideoPlayer, as it provides a much-needed repeat video function that not all native Android movie players include.

Analysis

While the new iPad drained faster than the asus k53s battery iPad 2, its 12.8 hours of battery life is still the second-highest result we've seen on a AA-PB2VC6W/B tablet using a single battery. Even compared with the Transformer Prime with its battery-embedded keyboard, the iPad lasted only 3 hours less. Even more impressive was that it achieved this running at that incredibly impressive 2,048x1,536-pixel resolution.

Looking at the iPad 2 results, we also asus k43 battery saw evidence that Apple made some very meaningful battery optimizations going from version 4.3 to 5.1 of its OS. And although the iPad 2 got 1.4 hours more juice when watching a movie, nearly 13 hours of continuous 720p playback is asus a53u battery nothing to thumb your nose at. That gets you an entire season of "Game of Thrones," with enough leftover power to squeeze in a couple "The Walking Dead" episodes as well. That's a lot of good-looking entertainment you can consume on just one charge.

We will follow up soon with more iPad battery life results, including Wi-Fi-, 4G, and 1080p tests. Also, check out our full tablet battery life list for more comparisons.

Uruguay is First Country to Get New Model XO Laptop

On the opening day of the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Inter-American Development Bank, One Laptop per Child (OLPC), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide every child in the samsung n150 battery world access to new channels of learning, sharing and self-expression, announced that Uruguay will be the first country in the samsung n150 plus battery world to receive the newest model XO children’s laptop.

Uruguay began working with OLPC in 2007 and by mid-2010 achieved samsung n230 battery complete laptop saturation, providing XO’s to all 570,000 primary school children in the country. The project recently ordered 60,000 XO 1.75’s in order to take advantage of the samsung n145 plus battery many breakthrough hardware and software features in the new model.

“We are deeply committed to making One Laptop a Child a reality for all our children because we believe that digital fluency is samsung n148 battery essential to a 21st century education,” said Miguel Brechner, Director of the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay and in charge of Plan Ceibal. “The XO laptop empowers children by allowing them to explore the world, be creative, learn by doing and collaborate and share with their classmates and communities.”

During its 2012 Annual Meeting in Montevideo, representatives from the Inter-American Development Bank will visit several schools to see how children and teachers are integrating XO laptops into their classrooms.

The XO 1.75 provides significant advances in technology that reduce u40-4s2200-g1l3 power consumption and make the laptop more rugged for children’s use. This is the first laptop from OLPC to incorporate an ARM-based processor from Marvell, a leading global semiconductor company that has collaborated closely with One Laptop per Child on samsung n250 battery technology development. The Marvell Armada 610 processor in the XO 1.75 uses very low power, 4 watts when in use and 200 milliwatts when idle, which is a quarter of the u40-3s4400-g1l3 power consumption of other processors on the market. Power consumption is a major challenge for laptop deployments in remote and rural regions where electricity is scarce or non-existent.

The XO 1.75 will also feature a new operating system release with the newest version of the Sugar learning environment. Developed under OLPC’s leadership with contributions from the samsung n150p battery Sugar development community, the new version of Sugar includes significant improvements in usability, performance and easier self-discovery of how Sugar works.

“We salute Plan Ceibal for its leadership in providing all Uruguayan children access to a u40-3s4400-c1m1 modern education,” said Rodrigo Arboleda, Chairman and CEO of the One Laptop per Child Association. “Uruguay is a u40-3s4000-s1l2s great example of a well-planned, well-executed deployment that is having a positive impact on children’s educational development.”

About One Laptop per Child

One Laptop per Child (OLPC at http://www.laptop.org) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide every child in the world access to new channels of learning, sharing and self-expression. In partnership with the samsung n145p battery public and private sectors and non-governmental organizations and supported by comprehensive implementation and pedagogical services, OLPC seeks to provide each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power connected laptop that empowers individual learning and growth.

How to Protect Your Laptop

A laptop’s portability makes it convenient--and an easy target for thieves.

Losing your laptop can be devastating, especially if you keep important documents and files on its hard drive, without a backup. Here are five ways to protect your laptop from being stolen (or from remaining stolen), as well as to safeguard the data you store on it.

1. Use a Physical Lock

Physically locking your laptop to an immovable object isn't exactly the coolest thing you can do, but it works. Just about every laptop on the market is equipped with a small lock slot that works with laptop locks such as the Kensington ClickSafe Keyed Laptop Lock ($45) or the Targus Ultra Max Laptop Cable Lock ($50).

A laptop lock isn't svelte, but it is secure. These laptop locks work just as bicycle chain locks do: You find a large, immovable object, such as your desk, and wrap the metal cable around it. Insert the lock into your laptop's lock slot, and your computer becomes virtually theft-proof, assuming that the thief cares about keeping it in working condition. This isn't a viable solution for many places--you're unlikely to find a lot of immovable furniture in a coffee shop, for instance--but it is useful if you need to leave your laptop alone for any amount of time (say, in a hotel room).

2. Install Tracking Software

Well, your laptop has been stolen. Or perhaps you lost it, and some unscrupulous individual picked it up (in other words, they stole it).

How can you retrieve it? Fire up the laptop-tracking software that you had the foresight to install on your machine.

A new samsung n350 battery breed of laptop security software has arrived, and it's very effective. Using several different elements, including IP address locations, Wi-Fi positioning, and even the ability to turn on the laptop's webcam remotely, laptop-tracking software can help you get samsung np-n150 battery your laptop back.

Flipcode's Hidden, Absolute Software's LoJack for Laptops, and ActiveTrak's GadgetTrak are just a few examples of laptop-tracking software.

A small Mac application, the $15-a-year Hidden uses IP addresses to pinpoint your u40-3s4400-c1h1 laptop's location. On top of that, Hidden can take photos remotely using your laptop's webcam, as well as 63gu40026-1a capture screenshots of what the thief does on your computer, so you can identify the culprit by both face and name (if the person happens to log in to an email account or social network).

LoJack keeps tabs on your laptop.LoJack costs $30 a year, and works on both Windows and Mac computers. In addition to tracking your stolen laptop, LoJack lets you freeze your computer remotely, create a u40-3s4000-g1b1 custom message to display on its screen, and remotely erase files from your laptop--a huge plus for business users who might be carrying sensitive documents.

GadgetTrak works with both Windows and Mac machines, and costs $20 a year. GadgetTrak uses Wi-Fi positioning to find the Uniwill U40 battery location of your laptop within about 10 to 20 feet, and lets you take remote photos of your laptop's captor. The software is also tamper-proof, so no one can modify it on the laptop unless you deactivate the software from the GadgetTrak website.

Having laptop-tracking software installed on your portable doesn't guarantee its recovery, and you'll have to combine the software with some old-fashioned sleuthing (checking your local Craigslist ads for laptop fire sales, for example) in order to catch the thief. But it's definitely a start.

3. Back Up Your Data

Losing a $1000 piece of machinery is pretty bad, but losing a $1000 piece of machinery with all of your important files on it is much, much worse. If your laptop ends up in the wrong hands, the last thing you want is for all of your data to land there too.

For this reason, you should probably invest in a advent 5431 battery physical external hard drive, such as the supertough IoSafe Solo Pro ($350 for 1TB), which is both waterproof and fireproof, or the versatile, hot-swappable LaCie 2big Quadra ($369 for 2TB). You don't have to back up your computer every 5 seconds, but it is a advent 5611 battery good idea to back up the machine whenever you can remember to do so. It's also wise to keep sensitive documents off portable machines and drives entirely, if at all possible.

For backing up recent documents, I prefer using cloud-based backup services such as Dropbox or Mozy. Cloud-based backup services are much more convenient because you can access them from anywhere you have an Internet connection, and you don't have to plug your laptop into a physical hard drive.

Secure your files in the cloud with Mozy.

Dropbox gives you 2GB of free storage space, which isn't enough for an entire hard-drive backup, but is msi bty-m66 battery usually plenty of room for recent documents and files. Dropbox works by putting a advent 5421 battery folder on your system: All you have to do is save a file in that folder, and it automatically syncs with Dropbox's server. The benefit of this autosync process is that even if someone steals your computer right then, you'll still be able to access that file by signing in to Dropbox from another computer.

Mozy is more of a traditional backup service. For $6 a month, Mozy gives you 50GB of space for backing up your entire hard drive (if you so choose). Mozy also offers multiple restore options, including Web-restore and DVD-restore, as well as through the Mozy software client. Restoring files from the Mozy cloud is a more involved process than simple syncing, though--it's backup software, not file-sharing software.

4. Don't Store Passwords

It doesn't matter how many obscure punctuation marks your msi m670 battery password has if your computer automatically remembers all of your passwords. Be wary of using password-management programs such as LastPass on anything that could be stolen (it's okay to stick LastPass on your 40-pound desktop, if you wish). You should also refrain from typing all of your passwords into a plain-text file on your computer.

[For tips on building secure, memorable passwords, check out "How to Build Better Passwords Without Losing Your Mind."]

If you lose your laptop, you should still take the advent 9115 battery precautionary measure of changing all of the passwords to your online accounts, just in case something slipped through the cracks. Also remember to file a police report and consider identity theft protection advent 5712 battery programs, especially if you ever made an online purchase using the laptop.

5. Get Insurance

You can find multiple kinds of insurance that will cover your laptop being stolen, lost, or dropped.

The first place to check is with the laptop's manufacturer: Many companies offer extra insurance (for an extra fee, naturally). You can also check with the store you purchased the laptop from--retailers like Best Buy typically sell extended warranties. Keep in mind, though, that extended warranties sometimes offer accident protection but rarely provide theft protection, so you may want to skip these plans if your main fear is losing your laptop.

If you can't get your laptop adequately insured by the advent 6552 battery manufacturer or by the store you purchased it from, take a look at your renter's or homeowner's insurance. Many renter's and homeowner's policies insure all of your advent 5302 battery private property, no matter where it is when it's stolen. These policies vary greatly, but usually they are limited to theft, vandalism, fire, and flooding--not accidental coffee spills or a fall from a windowsill.

If you use your laptop primarily for business purposes, your business's insurance policy may also cover it.

Beyond those options, if you still can't find the advent 6441 battery coverage you want, you can always consult third-party laptop and electronics insurance companies. These services offer the most comprehensive coverage for a notebook, though they can be expensive if your machine is advent 9315 battery already covered under another insurance policy. Safeware offers stand-alone notebook insurance that covers everything from theft and vandalism to cracked screens, accidental damage, and liquid spills.

I have not used Safeware personally, but I have used the similar, student-specific coverage from CSI Insurance Agency. It protects electronic equipment from theft, fire, floods, earthquakes, vandalism, electrical damage, water damage, and accidental damage. While I had CSI, I successfully filed three claims (one for laptop damage, and two for stolen cameras).

Protect Yourself

Even if you take all of these precautionary steps, having your laptop stolen will still be painful. But it will be less painful if you know that your files are backed up, your passwords are safe, your insurance company will pay for the loss, and you have a very real chance of catching the crook.

Microsoft’s big challenge ahead

A two-day forced vacation from the MacBook Pro I normally use during work hours, necessitated by a logic board replacement, forced me to turn instead to a Hewlett-Packard notebook computer running Microsoft Windows.

The switch, plus last week’s news about Apple Inc.’s new iPad (more on that next week), got me to thinking. I’m not a u40 battery stock market guru, and mine may not be the best investment advice you can find, but here goes: Short your Microsoft stock, if you don’t dump it altogether.

That’s a bit extreme, and Microsoft’s partisans would be quick to advent 5301 battery note that there is plenty of life remaining in the firm and its products. Indeed, one of the preferred productivity applications on the advent 5612 battery Apple desktop/notebook platform is Microsoft’s version of Office for the Mac. But that doesn’t eliminate or ease the challenges the folks in Redmond, Wash., have ahead of them.

First, there are those incredible iPad sales numbers. In announcing the “new iPad,” as Apple called it last week, the M66NBAT-6 firm said it had sold more iPads in 2011 than any other single computer maker had sold desktop or notebook PCs. Other analysts say Apple should easily sell a total of 100 million iPads by the BTY-M66 end of 2012. Since every iPad has at least a Wi-Fi connection, and often a wireless data radio, that means a lot of “connected devices” out there, ones that can access cloud-based applications and data.

That has all sorts of implications - for users, for system administrators and, again, for Microsoft. In a acer 5943 battery cloud-based environment, a tablet (iPad or otherwise) or a desktop computer, for that matter, essentially becomes a advent 9415 battery terminal, accessing both data and applications from the cloud. Fair enough, but from whom will those applications be obtained? It could be Microsoft, but it doesn’t have to be. Just ask Google, which is very happy to sell you its online productivity software. Or talk to Oracle, which now owns and distributes OpenOffice, a highly compatible clone of Microsoft Office.

The bottom line? Microsoft should embrace services such as OnLive Desktop — and do so, pronto — to keep viable links to customers.

Second on the list of potential giants in the Microsoft forest would be the Windows operating system, and even those vaunted applications. Yes, the msi m662 battery release of Windows 8 is in the wings, and a public “beta” version is available. But even Windows 7, itself a vast improvement over the ill-starred Vista release of a few years back, is clunky and feels dated, especially in the face of the acer 5943g battery touch-gesture-rich operating system on the iPad, elements of which Apple is bringing not only to its next desktop OS X release, Mountain Lion, but also to individual applications. Ironically, there are bunches of touch-sensitive Windows-running desktops out there; the Microsoft software just isn’t as creative in exploiting touch.

On the Web browser front, Microsoft is wildly optimistic when it advertises Internet Explorer 9 as the start of a great Internet surfing experience. Unless one wants to ride a wave of creamed corn, that is. Using IE9, even on a advent 5711 battery computer with a relatively new and supposedly msi vr600 battery powerful quad-core AMD processor, is anything but elegant or fast. Again, Microsoft seems to be blissfully ignorant of such competitive products as Apple’s Safari, Google’s Chrome or Mozilla.org’s Firefox, let alone Opera Software’s eponymous browser.

It doesn’t have to be this way, and it shouldn’t. This columnist was opposed to hegemony when that word was applied chiefly to the Soviet Union, and a vibrant, competitive software/applications marketplace is in everybody’s best interest. Those of us who want to root for Microsoft’s applications - some of which are quite good - are just waiting for some signs of life on the part of a technology titan.

Infinity Blade Is Just Getting Started With the iPad's Retina Display

Apple’s new iPad looks and feels almost exactly like the iPad 2, until your turn it on and start using it. The retina display, which has more pixels than your standard HDTV, is a wonder, and app developers have been scrambling to update their products for it.

One of those apps is Infinity Blade II, arguably one of the advent 6651 battery most popular games on the iOS platform. Chair Entertainment, which makes the app, managed to finish in time to deliver an update today. Mashable caught up with Chair Founders bothers Donald and Geremy Mustard for a brief chat on what it took to retina-fy the app and how the retina display makes things better.

[More from Mashable: New Verizon 4G iPads Can Also Run on AT&T]

The updated Infinity Blade II, available now, is not the advent 5311 battery same game Apple demonstrated at last month’s iPad New launch. That game, Infinity Blade: Dungeons, is a batefl50l6c40 whole new style of game play. Donald Mustard called it “a dungeon crawler that takes place in the same universe.” It won’t hit the App Store, though, until this fall.

In the meantime, Chair has been working on a LIP6220QUPC SY6 couple of other important updates, including this one for the iPad third-generation’s new retina display. Chair’s Jeremy Mustard told us that it took about two weeks of hard work to get it working properly. The advent 6553 battery result is a game that works smoothly on the new, higher-resolution display and, despite all the extra pixels, is not scaled up (stretched and distorted) in the least. It does not, however, look much more digitally rich than the original Infinity Blade II.

“Apple has given us a lot of cool stuff with the new iPad,” said Jeremy Mustard. However he added that the advent 5312 battery retina display overshadows some of the other important innovations. With its A5X CPU and quad-core GPU, the new iPad is “twice as powerful as the iPad 2,” he said.

For games like Infinity Blade II, it takes a lot of CPU and GPU power to render each pixel, Mustard explained. “You can take advantage of all the advent 5511 battery new pixels or use [the power] to make each pixel look a lot cooler.”

Mustard says that Infinity Blade II’s March 15th update definitely uses advent 5313 battery a lot more pixels, but he left a little room on the CPU and GPU “to use that extra power on the next update.”

In other words, Infinity Blade’s next app update (which will also be free to IB2 owners) will look even better. That update will also include a new batefl50l6c48 social gaming feature called “ClashMobs.” We’ll have more on that in a future report.

Donald Mustard said the new iPad lets them do some amazing stuff and their plan is, “We’re going to keep pushing the new iPad to the limit.” That should be music to every iPad gamer’s ears.9 Cell LIP6220QUPC SY6 Battery.

iPad goes on sale, draws crowds in 10 nations

Apple's latest iPad drew die-hard fans to stores in the U.S. and nine other countries Friday, many of whom lined up for hours to be among the first to buy one.

The third version of the iPad went on sale there at 8 a.m. local time, with 25 other countries getting it a week later. The new Sony VGP-BPS8 battery model, at prices starting at $499 in the U.S., comes with a faster processor, a much sharper screen and an improved camera, though the changes aren't as big as the upgrade to the iPad 2.

"I don't think it's worth the price but I guess I'm a victim of society," Athena May, 21, said in Paris.

RELATED: Apple's new iPad brings 4G, better camera, more pixels than an HDTV

About 450 people lined up outside Apple's Ginza store in downtown Tokyo. Some had spent the night sleeping outside the store. In Madison, Wis., people brought reclining lawn chairs for naps, while a few played games on older iPads.

Dipak Varsani, 21, got in line in London at 1 a.m. Thursday local time and said he was drawn by the new device's better screen.

"You've got clearer movies and clearer games," he said. "I use it as a multimedia device."

In Hong Kong, a steady stream of buyers picked up their new devices at preset times at the city's sole Apple store after entering an online lottery.

The system, which required buyers to have local ID cards, also helped thwart visitors from mainland China — Apple's fastest growing market — who have a dell Latitude D610 battery reputation for scooping up Apple gadgets to get them earlier and avoid sales tax at home. It has not yet been announced when the iPad goes on sale in China.

Kelvin Tsui, a 26-year-old hospital worker in Hong Kong, was allowed to buy two and planned to sell the second to make money.

Two years after the dbut of the HP DV6000 battery first iPad, the device's launch has become the second-biggest "gadget event" of the year, after the annual iPhone release. Customers could have ordered iPads ahead of time to arrive at home Friday, but many came out in person for the atmosphere.

"People always stop to talk to us," Harry Barrington-Mountford, 22, said in London. "I am exhausted though. I have only had about 45 minutes of sleep."

Christos Pavlides, 24, got to a downtown Philadelphia store at 10 p.m. Thursday and was the first in line. He already owns the two previous iPad models and several iPhones and figures the new iPad was next.

Despite competition from Dell Vostro 3300 battery cheaper tablet computers such as Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire, the iPad remains the most popular tablet computer. Apple Inc. has sold more than 55 million iPads since its debut in 2010.

For some customers, standing in line was the only chance to get a new iPad on Friday. Apple quickly ran out of supplies it set aside for advance orders. The company was telling customers Thursday to expect a two- to three-week wait for orders placed through its online stores. Some buyers feared even longer waits.

New iPad vs. iPad 2: Which One Should You Get?

A colleague asked me an interesting question the other day: "So I can get a free iPad 2, but should I get the new iPad?" Now, I don't anticipate many out there will have the chance to get a free iPad 2, but Apple has dropped the price of the 16GB iPad 2 to $399, making the iPad 2 vs. the new iPad a worthy fight.

"Should I get an iPad 2 for $399 or the new iPad for $499?" and "Should I get rid of my iPad 2 for the new iPad?" are questions I have been getting since the new iPad was announced.

So, let's answer them -- below are the major differences between Apple's two tablets.

Display:

The iPad 2 and the new iPad look almost exactly the same except for the screen. Yes, the new iPad is .03 inches thicker and .11 pounds heavier, but you really don't notice the difference in your hand. But once the screen on the new iPad is turned on, the difference between the two tablets is striking.

The 2048 x 1536-resolution Retina Display on the new iPad is absolutely magnificent. The high resolution makes it look as if you are holding an HDTV in your hand; pictures look incredibly crisp, video even crisper, and text is much sharper.

"It massages your eyes," a friend said. The difference doesn't really show well in photos or hp mini 210 battery video; you have to check them out in person, and when you do, you will see the difference. I promise.

Faster performance:

The new iPad's A5x processor with quad-core graphics is faster the previous iPad's A5 processor. The new processor helps make beautiful graphics possible. When I compared a game like Air Supremacy on the new iPad and the iPad 2, the difference was very clear. The game on the new iPad was more vivid and more responsive as I flew the fighter jet around.

However, for everyday stuff, like browsing the web, using regular apps for reading, and e-mail, the iPad 2 still feels really fast.

Camera:

I will be the first one to say the camera on the iPad 2 is flat out bad. It takes very grainy and sometimes-blurry photos.

The new iPad has a much improved iSight, 5-megapixel camera. I have taken a number of test shots and the HP HSTNN-LB42 Battery difference in quality is beyond noticeable. There's no more blur and shots are very crisp. You can see the difference between these shots -- one taken with the iPad 2 on with the new iPad.

They aren't quite as good as the 8-megapixel camera on the Compaq Evo N610C Battery iPhone 4S, but I don't think it has to be. You have to ask yourself: how often am I going to take pictures with a tablet in my face? It's fairly awkward to hold up the tablet in a street or park. In my opinion, an improved camera isn't a reason to buy a new tablet.

LTE 4G:

The new iPad is available with AT&T and Verizon LTE, which is much faster than the 3G available in the iPad 2.

This is really only useful for those who require connectivity on the go and in places where there's no Wi-Fi connection. Still, if you want a LENOVO IdeaPad S10 battery very fast connection while you are out and about, the LTE in the new iPad is very fast.

On AT&T's LTE network in New York the iPad version of ABCNews.com loaded in just three seconds. And browsing through some of my friend's Facebook pictures was just as fast as it is on my home Wi-Fi network. It's fast. Really fast.

Dictation:

Lots of people have wondered why there's no Siri -- Apple's voice-enabled digital assistant -- on the new iPad. We don't have an answer to that, but there is a dictation feature that converts your voice to text on the new iPad. Just tap the microphone on the keyboard and you can speak sentences into the tablet.

The dictation is accurate and quick. It even caught words like "arachnophobia." However, you have to HP F4809A battery actually speak "period" or "question mark" for it to insert punctuation. Also, you have to be connected to a Wi-Fi or 3G / 4G network for the dictation to work. It's a very neat feature, especially for the visually impaired.

So?

No one should ever say no to a free iPad, but as I said at the start, that offer squ-412 battery doesn't come along very frequently. My advice is that if you are in the market for a new iPad you should spend the extra $100 and get the new iPad. The improved screen alone makes it a worthy choice.

Now, if you already have an iPad 2, the new version isn't a necessary upgrade. The screen is much nicer and it is a bit faster, but chances are the next iPad will be an even bigger upgrade. (Then, of course, the new iPad will be the old iPad). And if you've got the original iPad, you'll definitely want to get the newer iPad.

But hey, if you're looking to save some cash on a new tablet, $399 will buy you the second-best tablet on the market. And that's just not a bad deal, even if you can't get one for free.

International Travel and Your Notebook Computer

Do a thorough backup before hitting the road, and carry a flash drive for backing up new and changed files on the road. Keep the flash drive in your pocket, not in the Notebook Computer bag. (You don't want your backup stolen with the Notebook Computer.)

I recommend TrueCrypt for encrypting your sensitive files. It's free, simple to use, and pretty-near unbreakable. At least it is if you use a strong password.

International Concerns

If you're traveling outside of the country, you will have to go through customs at least twice. And custom officials may have the HP DV6000 Battery right to examine the contents of your hard drive.

You should therefore delete anything that might get you into trouble. Sure, you could encrypt the replacement laptop battery problematic files. But if the customs officer asks if you have anything is hidden on the drive, you're safest if you can tell the truth.

You'll want to recharge your Notebook Computer on the trip, so you'll have to think about Lenovo T61 Battery electricity. AC power plugs and voltages vary from country to country.

Voltage shouldn't be a big problem. Every toshiba a105 battery Notebook Computer power adapter I've examined in the last decade can handle voltages from 100-240v. Examine the tiny text on your power brick to make sure it can handle that range.

But you will need an adapter for the plug. These are easy to find and often cost less than $10. Just use your favorite search engine to look for ac plug adapter and the name of the country.

Shanta Hasan asked me for advice about traveling internationally with a Notebook Computer.

Many travel concerns are identical whether or not you're crossing international borders. I'll start with those and then go on to specifically international issues.

Travel Concerns No Matter Where You're Going

Your Notebook Computer could be stolen at the airport, in your hotel, or when you're walking down a street. A few precautions should provide protection.

1.Carry it in a case that doesn't look like a toshiba PA3399U battery Notebook Computer case. There's no reason to walk around visually screaming "I've got expensive equipment here!"

2.When you're in public, always keep an eye or a hand on that case. No one should be able to touch it without you knowing it.

3.If you're going to leave the Notebook Computer in your hotel, secure it. If there's a safe in your room, use that. If not, ask if it can be locked in the hotel safe. Or bring a secure Notebook Computer cable. Both Kensington and SecurityKit.com make them.(gateway squ-412 asus k53e battery)

4.If someone threatens you with violence, give them your Notebook Computer. It's not worth your life.

If your Notebook Computer is stolen, you don't want to lose more than the hardware. Protect all of your data by backing it up, and further protect your sensitive data by encrypting it.

New, High-End Laptop Offers Linux Preinstalled

An attractive option for many reasons, though, is to buy the laptop with Linux preloaded, as I've noted before. You typically pay a little bit more, but you also avoid any headaches that may arise from getting everything to “just work.”

Buying hardware with Linux preloaded also helps ensure that usage statistics for the free and open source operating system are a little more accurate by making sure your Lenovo Thinkpad T61 Battery operating system “vote” gets officially counted.

In any case, last week Linux-focused vendor ZaReason launched a brand-new Linux laptop targeting the HP F4812A Battery high end of the market, and it looks pretty attractive. Here's a laptop batteries uk quick rundown of some of the key features in ZaReason's Verix 2.5, which is available now priced starting at $1,799.00.

An i7 Option

The 15.6-inch Verix 2.5's base configuration includes a 2.3GHz Intel i3-2350M processor with two cores and four threads, but i5 and i7 alternatives with up to eight threads are also available for an HP Pavilion DV6000 Battery extra charge.

ZaReason's Verix 2.5For memory, 4GB of DDR3-1333 comes standard, but it's expandable up to 16GB; the default hard drive offers 250GB and 5400 RPM, but upgrades include a 300GB Intel SSD. Nvidia's GTX 580M serves as the hp dv2000 battery video card with 2GB of DDR5 video RAM.

A bright LED backlit display offers 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution, while a subwoofer and speakers on both sides of the hp g62 battery keyboard promise quality sound output. Bluetooth, 802.11 B/G/N WiFi, a 3.0 megapixel webcam, and a combo CD-RW and dual-layer DVD-RW drive are also included.

Numerous Linux Possibilities

Ubuntu 11.10, Debian 6, Linux Mint 12, and Fedora 16 are among the operating systems that can be preinstalled; alternatively, the machine can also be purchased with no operating system at all.

The Verix 2.5 certainly isn't the cheapest laptop out there, but it offers a number of advantages that could counterbalance that price.

If you're a Linux fan and are in the market for a high-end laptop, this could be a good one to check out.

How HP designed a laptop with 32 hours of battery life

When Hewlett-Packard engineers begin designing a new laptop, they bring in the battery experts like John Wozniak on the very first day. That’s part of what enabled HP to create a laptop with a 32-hour battery life.

And that also tells you how important energy efficiency has become in modern electronics, where the demand for thin, powerful, and lightweight is putting an enormous amount of stress on battery technologists. The battery has been called “the most humble and unsexy of inventions.” But it will likely be one of the most important technology battlegrounds of the future. Batteries are a $50 billion industry, and that could become bigger with more breakthroughs. People are far more productive when they don’t have to hunt down outlets to charge a laptop.(TOSHIBA PA3534U-1BRS Battery)

Wozniak (pictured), HP’s battery guru, has to deal with requests from all sides. Industrial designers want thin batteries in thin laptops. Marketing people also want lighter weight. But engineers like Wozniak can only show the designers what they have to currently work with and what they might have in the near future.

“It depends on the timing of the launch,” Wozniak (no relation to Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak) said at a press event at HP’s original garage headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif. “We’ll tool up and produce a couple of different options. It’s like a puzzle game, and you see what kind of battery is going to fit with a certain kind of design.”

HP created a 32-hour solution last year for the launch of its HP EliteBook 8460p laptop (pictured right) for business users. To get to 32 hours, you had to add an HP BB09 ultra-extended life notebook battery, which attaches to the bottom of the laptop. That adds more than a pound to the weight. Some new solutions can push the life of a laptop to 36 hours.J(PA3465U-1BRS KOHJINSHA battery)

I’m trying one of those out right now. The standard battery gives the machine about 10 or so hours of life, according to the meter HP provided. But the life goes way up if you snap on the extended battery pack. That battery pack has nine cells (the pink cylinders pictured below) in it and adds the equivalent of 100 watt hours, which is the legal limit; any more and HP would have to ship it as dangerous goods. Once you snap it on, the notebook has about 200 watt hours of battery life.

“It comes with a price of added weight,” Wozniak said.

While improving battery efficiency is important to getting longer laptop battery life, the improvement has been gradual. So HP has focused on better power management for its laptops, turning the power down or powering components off when not in use

If you keep the operation on a light level, with six or seven watts usage, then you can stretch the battery life out to 28 or 32 hours, Wozniak said. You can do that by reducing the number of times your laptop sends out wireless signals and by reducing the screen brightness.

Replacing a hard drive with a solid state flash memory drive also helps. HP found it could improve battery life 18 percent on the HP EliteBook 8460p when it used flash memory instead of a hard drive.(samsung n150 battery  notebook battery)

HP also used Intel’s Sandy Bridge integrated graphics — combining a microprocessor and graphics on the same chip — rather than a stand-alone graphics chip. That saved another 26 percent in power savings.

While processor speeds and storage capacity keep racing ahead, Wozniak said batteries are getting about 3 – 5 percent better each year in energy density, or the amount of energy produced by a battery in a given space. Plenty of attempts have been made to stretch that out. But the disappointments are myriad.

Wozniak said a silver zinc battery showed promise, with 40 percent better energy density. But the chemistry of the battery broke down after just 40 or 50 charges. To satisfy consumers, rechargeable batteries should last for hundreds or thousands of charges.

Some technologies have tried replacing carbon graphite anodes with silicon anodes, since silicon can store more energy. But the problem is that it swells in size. The silicon has to be encapsulated in carbon, offsetting some of the gains.

Batteries produce hydrogen gas when they are charging, resulting in the swelling. And since hydrogen is explosive, the risk of a fire or explosion is very real when it comes to battery operation. Batteries can corrode over time as well and leak dangerous chemicals.(laptop computer batteries wholesale battery )

That’s why the circuitry around a battery, which can help measure its charge and improve its efficiency, has to be physically separated from the battery itself.

Lithium ion batteries are the rechargeable types used in laptops; they’re lighter than other kids of batteries and come in a variety of shapes. They’re powerful, but the cell’s capacity diminishes over time. The batteries can also get hot when they’re in use.

Some battery cells are round (see the pink cells in the picture) and others are flat, or prismatic, (like the one pictured above)

“This has been familiar in the history of energy,” Wozniak said. “There are theoretical disruptive technologies. I don’t know what the next one is. There are a lot of new chemistries. The Holy Grail for the battery industry is to have a non-flammable electrolyte.”.(VGP-BPL8 HP MINI 311 battery)

The electrolyte is the chemical solution (either wet or dry) that causes a reaction that produces electrons. HP itself once did its own fuel cell battery replacement technology research, but it sold that business off. Now Wozniak stays in close touch with the suppliers that manufacture cells.

Right now, the thinnest battery cell size is about 2.8 millimeters, with the total battery thickness at 5 millimeters. The thinnest Ultrabooks (the thin, fast computers Intel is promoting this year) are about 18 millimeters thick for 13-inch models and 21 millimeters for 14-inch and larger displays. Intel requires that the battery lives be at least five hours.

Wozniak believes that the cells can be brought down to 2.5 millimeters without too many trade-offs in energy density.

The biggest consumers of energy in laptops and tablets today are the displays. Touchscreens take more energy than normal displays.

HP also put ambient light sensors on all of its EliteBook models. Those sensors adjust the display brightness based on how much light is available in a room. Toward the end of the year, Wozniak expects to see Ultrabooks that operate on five watts of power, compared to 25 watts for many laptops in the past.

“[Battery life is] going to get better and better, because a lot of resources are going into solving it,” Wozniak said.

How and when to charge your tablet battery

Tablets have taken over the mobile world, because they are the best of all mobile worlds – smaller and lighter than laptops, and more useable than smartphones. It’s also possible to get a better squ-412 battery life in your tablet than you do with your smartphone or laptop, extending you beyond a full day of work. However, this won’t happen if you’re careless with your usage and your battery. Believe it or not, there are ways to maximize that battery for a life of extended mobility.

The life of your tablet battery

Much of the change in batteries grew out of the necessity of safety in portable devices. Because mobility means taking a device through severe heat, cold, shock, and vibration, the batteries had to designed for maximum safety and gateway mt6705 battery longevity. Although many may doubt this claim, storing energy of several kilowatts can be dangerous, especially when stored in a device that’s constantly on the move and often dropped, shaken, and exposed to harsh environments.

Since these batteries are tucked safely away from the user, it’s up to the physical and software systems — the Battery Management System (BMS) — to care for them. The BMS handles some gateway mt6711 battery fairly complex tasks, such as managing the integrity of a battery when cells begin to fail (usually do to the battery lifespan). Unfortunately, the BMS can’t do everything. The user of the device still has to take care of the mobile to ensure extended and safe battery life.

Here are three main tips that should easily apply to all batteries in mobile devices:

Temperature: Do not expose your device to extreme gateway mt6723 battery temperatures. Cooler temperatures prevent battery corrosion, so it’s always best to keep your device from overheating. It happens. Working with a tablet in your lap, you can feel the gateway mt6730 battery warmth heating up your legs. That means the battery is also getting hot. Work with your tablet in such a position that heat can easily dissipate.

Discharge: It’s a myth that modern batteries need a full discharge to retain “memory” (this only applies to a nickle-based battery pack). Every full cycle wears the battery down by a small gateway mt6728 battery amount. So, smaller discharges are better. Try not to let your battery go beyond the half-way point before applying a charge.

Abuse: This is a no-brainer, but people do get careless, and every drop of that tablet runs the risk of damaging the battery within. This also applies to improper discharges. These types of discharges can happen when a process gets out of control and is allowed to continue on, which quickly runs down the battery. If you see this happening (if the tablet starts responding slowly), find the rogue process and kill it or restart the tablet.

Let’s look at some more tips on how and when to charge your tablet gateway mt6821 battery.

First charge: When you first unbox your tablet, you should approach the first charge differently, depending upon the type of battery the tablet has:

?Lead acid: The battery should be fully charge. Apply a top-off charge before using.

?Nickle-based: Charge the battery 14-16 hours before the first use.

?Lithium Ion: Apply a top-off charge before the first use.

Full vs. partial charge: Some batteries actually do poorly if you only give it a partial charge.

?Lead acid: You must always give this gateway mt6840 battery a full charge, as a partial charge can create sulfation.

?Nickle-base: A partial charge is good.

?Lithium Ion: A partial charge is actually better than full charge.

Full discharge: There are types of batteries that actually prefer a complete discharge now and then.

?Lead acid: A deep discharge can damage the gateway mt6841 battery .

?Nickle-base: Apply scheduled discharges only to prevent the battery from retaining memory.

?Lithium Ion: A deep discharge can damage the gateway mt6916 battery.

Battery calibration: Some batteries do not need calibration. Here are the details:

?Lead acid: Not applicable.

?Nickle-base: Apply a discharge/charge when the fuel gauge becomes inaccurate. Repeat every 1-3 months.

?Lithium Ion: Apply a discharge/charge when the fuel gauge becomes inaccurate. Repeat every 1-3 months.

Use while charging: Is it okay to have your device on while charging it?

?Lead acid: It’s okay to have device on when charging.

?Nickle-base: It’s always best to turn the AS10B3E device off during a charge, since a parasitic load can either alter full-charge detection, overcharge the battery, and/or cause mini-cycles.

?Lithium Ion: It’s always best to turn the device off during a charge, since a parasitic load can either alter full-charge detection, overcharge the battery, and/or cause mini-cycles.

Unplugging when charged: Is it necessary to unplug your device once the charge is complete?

?Lead acid: This depends on the AS10B31 batttery charger. If the charger has correct float voltage, then it’s fine.

?Nickle-base: Always remove your device after a few days in the charger.

?Lithium Ion: This is unnecessary, because the charger turns off.

Temperature: How does temperature effect charging?

?Lead acid: It creates a slow charge from 32-113 degrees Fahrenheit / fast charge from 41-113 degrees Fahrenheit / the threshold is lowered above 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

?Nickle-base: It creates a slow charge from 32-113 degrees Fahrenheit / fast charge from 41-113 degrees Fahrenheit / the battery will not fully charge when it’s hot.

?Lithium Ion: Do not charge below AS10B51 freezing. Do not charge when above AS10B5E 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

Of course, this doesn’t take into consideration the effects of various types of software or networks (such as 4G, which will quickly drain a battery). Ultimately, if you use your battery with intelligence, it will reward you with a long life.

Sony VAIO VPC-SE23FX/S

Pros

Slim build. Light weight. Has 1080p display. Long gateway ml6227b battery life, doubled by an extended battery slice. Complimentary silicone keyboard skin is a nice touch.

Cons

Performance lags behind peers. Manual graphics gateway ml6230 battery switching (with a physical switch) is a drag. No Blu-ray drive.

Bottom Line

The Sony VAIO VPC-SE23FX/S is a competent desktop replacement laptop with long battery life and a healthy feature set, but a few fumbles, like manually switching graphics, keep it from ranking higher.

The Sony VAIO VPC-SE23FX/S ($999 direct) is the latest desktop replacement gateway ml6232 battery laptop to come out of Sony, and it ticks all the boxes on the list of favorite features, like a slim chassis, speedy Core i5 processor, 1080p display, and backlit keyboard. A few features are unexpected, like a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) for the security conscious, and a life-extending external battery slice. With such a feature set the Sony VAIO VPC-SE23FX/S will prove to be a tempting alternative to our Editors' Choice Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft) ($999 direct, 4 stars), even if the performance isn't quite as fast as that of its peers.

Design

The VPC-SE23FX/S features the same full-flat design seen in last Sony VAIO VPC-SE16FX/S ($1,249.99 direct, 4 stars), with no sloping in the keyboard and even thickness from front to back when closed. The S tacked onto the gateway ml6720 battery end of the model number indicates the platinum silver color seen here on the aluminum lid and palmrest as well as the plastic covering the rest of the chassis. The VAIO VPC-SE23FX is also available in black.

More

The VPC-SE23FX/S is under one inch thick, measuring 0.97 by 14.97 by 10.08 inches (HWD), and weighs only 4.4 pounds. It also comes with an external battery slice, which extends the battery life considerably, but also bumps up the total weight to 5.7 pounds. By comparison, the HP Envy 15 (2012) ($1,249.99 direct, 4 stars) weighs 5.7 pounds with no hardware.

The VPC-SE23FX/S's 15.6-inch widescreen offers an eye-popping 1,920-by-1,080 resolution display, the same resolution seen on the HP Envy 15 (2012). It's ideal for enjoying movies in full HD, except that you'll need to find gateway ml6721 battery those movies somewhere other than a Blu-ray disc, because the VPC-SE23FX/S is equipped with a DVD drive. The drop-hinge design used on the VPC-SE23FX/S provides the illusion that the screen is actually separate from the rest of the gateway ml6732 battery laptop, which is a pretty cool effect. Accompanying the display is Dolby Home Theater v.4 simulated surround sound, which produced clear sound and decent bass when tested with some streaming music (some David Bowie and M83). For actual surround sound you'll need a separate set of speakers.

The keyboard is full-sized, with an accompanying numeric pad, with chiclet-style keys and a glowing backlight. It also comes with a silicon keyboard cover, which covers the plastic keys with a silicone membrane that I actually preferred to the gateway mp8708 battery standard keyboard. The accompanying multitouch touchpad is responsive and smooth, and the right and left buttons clicked smoothly, if loudly.

Features

The VPC-SE23FX/S places all of its ports along the right hand side of the chassis, with the DVD optical drive on the left side. Two USB 2.0 ports and one USB 3.0 port are joined by an HDMI-out port, a VGA monitor gateway mt3422 battery connection, and Gigabit Ethernet. There are two media card slots, one for SD and SDHC cards, and another for Sony's proprietary Memory Stick cards (MS/Duo/Pro). On the front of the laptop is a physical switch to turn off all wireless connections, which includes 802.11n Wi-Fi,gateway mt3705 battery, Bluetooth 3.0, and WiDi 2.0—Intel's wireless HD media streaming technology (which requires an adapter, such as the $99 Netgear Push2TV.)

Also inside you'll find a 640GB 5,400rpm hard drive, which offers space enough for programs, photos, music and movies, but isn't as large and fast as the 750GB, 7200rpm drive found in the Samsung Series 7 (NP700Z5A-S03) ($1,299 list, 4 stars). It is, however, protected by Sony's G-Sensor shock protection to guard against hard drive gateway mt3707 battery damage from shakes and bumps. The VPC-SE23FX/S also comes with enhanced security in the form of a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and Symantec's Validation and ID Protection service (VIP).

You will be subject to some bloatware, but nothing to egregious or difficult to remove. On the desktop are two website links for eBay and special offers from Sprint. The VPC-SE23FX/S also comes with Evernote, Skype, Microsoft Office Starter 2010, and a 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security. Sony includes several VAIO branded utilities, such as VAIO Care and VAIO Messenger. Sony also covers the laptop with a one-year warranty.

Performance

Sony has outfitted the VPC-SE23FX/S with a 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5-2450M processor and 4GB of RAM, similar to the Core i5-2430M seen in the HP Envy 15 and the Core i5-2410M seen in the Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft). In PCMark 7 performance tests, the VPC-SE23FX/S scored 2,049 points, ahead of the Dell XPS 15z (2,012) but behind the Envy 15 (2,218 points). In gateway mt6451 battery CineBench R11.5 rendering tests, the VPC-SE23FX/S scored 2.78 points, ahead of both the HP Envy 15 and the Dell XPS 15z, but falling behind quad-core CPU equipped competitors like the Toshiba Satellite P755-S5269 ($979.99 list, 4 stars). The VPC-SE23FX/S fell behind in multimedia tests, but still completed Handbrake and Photoshop CS5 tests with enough speed (Handbrake 1:50, Photoshop 4:36) that it will satisfy the user who occasionally edits a clip for YouTube or touches up a photo.

The VPC-SE23FX/S offers both discrete and integrated graphics, with an AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics processor for high performance graphics and Intel's integrated graphics available for better power efficiency. Switching between the two involves manually flipping a switch that resides just above the keyboard. Using the Radeon GPU, the VAIO had playable gaming performance at gateway mt6452 battery lower resolution. In Crysis, the VPC-SE23FX/S produced 62.9 frames per second (fps), while at full 1920 by 1080 resolution and higher detail settings, it managed only 7.2 fps. Similar performance was seen in Lost gateway mt6458 battery Planet 2, where the VAIO VPC-SE23FX/S pumped out 51 fps at medium settings, and 17.3 fps at native resolution. Compare this to the leading scores of the HP Envy 15 (Crysis 62.7fps at medium settings) and the Samsung Series 7 (Lost Planet 2 64.3fps at medium settings) and you'll see that the Sony VAIO VPC-SE23FX/S holds its own fairly well.

The VPC-SE23FX/S has a sealed in battery, preventing us from determining the gateway mt6460 battery's exact size or watt-hour rating, but in our MobileMark 2007 battery life test, it lasted 6 hours 6 minutes, longer than both the HP Envy 15 (4:01) and Toshiba P755-S5269 (5:07), but falling behind the Samsung Series 7 (6:41) and the Dell XPS 15z (7:13). Nonetheless, it's a respectable length of time, and Sony bolsters it with an external battery slice. Sony estimates that the extended battery will add up to 6 hours of battery-life, stretching it to nearly 12 hours total.

The Sony VAIO VPC-SE23FX/S targets the buyer who wants the slim build and speedy performance offered by leading laptops, like the Editors' Choice Dell XPS 15z, and wants to keep their gateway mt6707 battery expenses under $1000. While the VPC-SE23FX/S doesn't have the performance to topple those top performers, it's definitely worth looking at, with its long-lasting battery, decent Core i5 processing, and extra features like WiDi 2.0, TPM and VIP security, and a good looking design.

Transformer Prime: benefits of extremely long battery life

Summary: Battery life is the bane of the mobile professional’s existence, and rightly so. Not only does using devices with good battery life make things easier, it can improve work in unexpected ways.

Mobile device users obsess over battery life as it is the one factor that can determine whether a gadget is proper for a given task. Who hasn’t been in the position of frantically searching for a KOHJINSHA battery power outlet to get the laptop charging so work could be finished before it dies? The amilo li3710 battery importance of having long battery life cannot be overestimated, and my recent test of devices with extremely good battery life has pointed out some unexpected benefits.

Most laptops being sold today can get through a day of use, as long as the use is not continuous. Five or six hours is typical for ultraportable laptops, with some lasting a little longer. That gateway squ-412battery life is not bad, but it causes the user to always be thinking about it during time away from a power outlet. Travelers have to be particularly aware of what the laptop battery gauge is squ-413 showing at all times, to make sure it lasts long enough no matter what the day brings.

Long battery life was the primary push behind my test of using tablets for extended periods in place of a laptop. Most Android tablets and the iPad 2 I have tested get a 4ur18650f-2-qc-ma1 batter good 10 - 12 hours of life out of a charge, and that is sufficient for most days so the approach to work can be adjusted in positive ways. The Transformer Prime with the laptop dock I am now testing takes that gateway 6020gz battery even further, with a solid 18 - 20 hours of continuous use between charges. This extremely long battery life has yielded unexpected advantages to the way I approach the work day.

Having real-world battery life that extended means no matter what happens during the day the battery is not going to run dry. That means I don’t think about the battery at all, and that is gateway 6518gz battery liberating. My entire focus is on the work at hand, as it should be for maximum productivity. I am more likely to conk out before the battery of the Transformer Prime will.

Aside from the boost in productivity, the lack of concern for the gateway 8510gz battery life has other benefits. When working in my office full of power, I frequently collaborate via video chat with colleagues and friends in the industry. It is valuable to bounce ideas off coworkers, and to discuss hot topics of the day to get other perspectives.

When traveling or working on battery power with a laptop, I make a gateway m460 battery conscious decision to pass on such collaboration. Video chatting hits the laptop battery hard (these chats can easily last over an hour), and since I have to be thinking about getting through the day, it usually has me pass on the collaboration. That’s not the case with the tablet/ keyboard combination; I don’t give a thought about the toll on battery life such communication will cost. I just do it.

The liberation from concern about battery life means I work without compromise while working mobile. If I need to chat with a coworker, I do it without a thought. The same applies to any gateway m680 battery activity on the system that hits the gateway m465-e battery harder than usual, such as copying lots of files. The other day I needed to move a bunch of images from my system to the cloud, and I just did it without concern. I realized later that had I been on my laptop with its shorter battery life, I would have postponed the copying to a time near a power outlet.

These examples are typical tasks that I can now do without consequence or concern. The same applies to the entire operating experience while mobile, and that is very liberating. My work is better due to the long gateway ml3109 battery life, and my approach to the work is without compromise. It sounds like mere common sense, but it wasn’t until using the Transformer Prime with its superior battery life that I realized how the limited battery life of my “real” laptop affected my usage. It’s not for everyone, but can provide unexpected benefits for some folks.

Extend Laptop's Life With These Tips

Consumers who spend a lot of money on a laptop should want to make the computer last.

Rob Michaud of Geek Squad offered the following tips on how to properly handle a laptop:

1. Even though laptops often lead us away from our desks, laptops are not meant to be used on laps. Laptops should be allowed to breathe. Laptops have intake vents on the bottom of the computer. They're meant to be used on a hard surface, not a bed, couch or pillow. Blocking the vents or fans can cause the computer to overheat.(KOHJINSHA battery SQU-809-F01 )

2. Passing a laptop to someone else or walking around with it when it's running can cause damage. Laptops have a hard drive, which has moving parts. (AS01B41 AS10B41)

"While the laptop's on, (hard drive) platters are spinning and it's trying to read that. So, when you hand it to somebody, you can actually have that needle damage the platter or the needle gets damaged itself," Michaud said. ( SQU-808-F01 amilo li3910 battery )

3. If a laptop is running slowly or freezing up, it could be caused by users who installed more than one anti-virus program. Two programs do the same thing and end up fighting each other, canceling each other out.( fujitsu-siemens amilo li3710 battery )

"You may think more secure, great, fantastic," Michaud said. "(It's) not actually a good thing."

4. Let a laptop rest. Leaving a laptop running at all times diminishes the battery life.

5. Also, make sure to debunk the dust.

"Dust is really one of the big contributors to overheating, and that can cause the computer to shut down and damage the internal parts," Michaud said. "So, a simple cleaning you can do at home is simply take your compressed air (can) and squirt it into the intake."(HP MINI 311 battery)

Morning fire ruins laptops at Springville High

According to the Nebo school district, a laptop battery overheated shortly after 6 a.m., sparking a fire in a science lab at Springville High School that destroyed 20 laptops and 10 laptop batteries.

A fire alarm went off when the blaze began, alerting a custodian, and the fire was isolated to the cabinet area of the computers and some minimal scorching on the walls, Springville Fire Department Chief Henry Clinton said.(gateway mx8734 battery AS10B73)

Students at the school joked that the incident was tied to the aspire 4820tg battery "Springville curse." The price tag associated with the loss of the laptops is estimated to be at least $10,000.

Global and China Laptop and Tablet PC Industry Report, 2011-2012

In 2011, laptop computer vendors encountered two major difficulties. First, Eurozone debt crisis deteriorated, while Europe is one of major laptop computer markets; second, the Thailand flood in October hit the HDD disk industry severely and impacted laptop computer battery shipment in best-season Q4 since nearly half of the hard disks worldwide were produced there. As a result, the laptop shipment registered 195 million units in 2011, just up 1.6% from 2010.

94% of global laptop computers are assembled by Taiwanese vendors, mostly ODMs instead of OEMs. Majority of vendors just define the product positioning, rather than design. ODMs assume not only design and gateway mx6426 battery production but component procurement. So, laptop ODM is not the field for which ordinary EMS manufacturers are competent, and only a few ones can do that.

In 2011, laptops witnessed two biggest gateway mx6440 battery changes. Above all, the traditional EMS corporations-- Flextronics quitted the laptop contract manufacture. Flextronics tapped into the field in 2009, but within two years, it only received HP's orders, and HP's order price was much BT.00606.009 lower than that of other vendors. Therefore, most of ODMs are reluctant to deal with HP's orders. Though Flextronics received orders, it suffered huge losses.

Hon Hai, quite similar to Flextronics, persevered in developing the laptop contract manufacture, but it strictly controlled the contract scale. Many believe Hon Hai will retreat from the laptop gateway mx6445 battery contract manufacture sooner or later. The withdrawal of EMS players brought a reprieve to laptop ODMs who competed fiercely for meager profit.

Second, the laptop production gateway mx6448 battery transferred to western China. Although all laptop ODMs are from Taiwan, their production bases are located in Mainland China. According to the data of the Ministry of Industry and BT.00607.124 Information Technology (MIIT), China's laptop output was 244 million in 2011, of which 230 million ones were exported. Herein, laptops cover Tablet PCs and Kindle Fire e-book readers.

In 2010, laptop manufacturers accessed to Chongqing successively. Their production bases put into production in 2011 when 25,478,200 computers were produced in Chongqing (an 11.9-fold rise), including 24,073,900 laptops (up 25.4-fold). However, Chengdu became the iPad production base, with the output of close to 20 million units in 2011.

Traditional laptop production bases are located in Shanghai and Kunshan. In 2011, 89.54 million laptops were produced in Shanghai and 89.07 million ones in Jiangsu Kunshan. The laptop production transferred to western China because of the rising labor costs in the Yangtze River Delta. For production staff and management personnel, the wages rose year by year, which made laptop ODMs with the gross margin of 3-4% be overwhelmed.

In western provinces of China, the labor costs are lower, but the logistics costs are higher. Moreover, the western labor costs are growing rapidly. Therefore, Chongqing is the gateway mx6447 battery second base at most; the Yangtze River Delta is still the BT.00607.128 first base. The future production base of Taiwanese laptop ODMs may be Viet Nam. The laptop supporting industrial chain in the Yangtze River Delta is the most perfect, and the logistics costs are the lowest, so the region will still be the main production base in the upcoming 2-3 years.

In 2011, Tablet PCs made great strides. Apple's iPad shipment reached 47.6 million, a substantial rise of 2.2 times. In fact, the biggest difference between Tablet PC and laptop lies in BT.00605.063 battery processors and screens. It is hard to make product differentiation in processors, while it is easier to differentiate screens, especially touch screens.

OGS (One Glass Solution) is most discussed and recognized as the development direction of touch screens. OGS has three kinds. To keep the independent industry chain, touch screen manufacturers gateway mx8711 battery integrate upstream tempered glass cover lens to gateway mx6956 battery propose TOL (Touch On Lens) solutions. Panel makers prefer in-house touch process, so they propose On-cell solutions and In-cell solutions. Under the guide of Apple, On-Cell and In-Cell solutions have grown mature.

The monopoly of Samsung in AMOLED forces Apple to seek cooperation with the panel makers such as Sharp and TMD, and Apple projects huge capital in R&D of screen and touch gateway mx6931 battery technology. It is very possible that Apple will accept On-Cell and In-Cell solutions of panel makers. Most people believe that In-Cell solutions will be adopted. At present, only TPK and Wintek supply touch screens for iPad, neither of which are panel manufacturers; if In-Cell solutions are employed, both of them will gateway mx6920 battery lose the business opportunities valued at USD8 billion, but it is out of the question. It is still unknown that whether TOL or In-Cell will win.

iPad 3 will be launched in March 2012. To reduce gateway mx6454 battery its over-reliance on Hon Hai, Apple has cooperated with Pegatron and it also considers the cooperation with Quanta Computer that is the largest laptop ODM.

Apple iPad 3 packs LAPTOP battery

The iPad 3 contains an 11,560mAh battery, the first take-apart of the third-generation Apple tablet has revealed.

Indeed, the new gagdet is packed with gateway mx6214 battery power storage behind its - Samsung-made, seemingly - 2048 x 1536 "retina display".

The autopsy, gateway mx6421 battery conducted by iFixit, shows a mere sliver of a motherboard up above the monster battery.

That mAh rating amounts to 43Wh - almost double the 25Wh AS10E7E battery capacity built into the iPad 2, and bigger than the 35Wh battery used in the latest 11in MacBook Air notebook computer.

Yet the iPad 3 runs for only as long as its predecessor, a fact that shows just how much juice the LC.BTP01.029 LTE 4G radio and that big screen can swallow. ?

HP's Spectre and the boldest laptop designs

Only a handful of laptops stand out from the crowd with truly unique designs. Here are some of our favorites.

The hottest laptop of the year so far is HP's new Envy 14 Spectre. This unique-looking system was a breakout star at CES 2012 because of its glass-covered lid and wrist rest, giving it a gleaming slate-like look that was different from gateway mx6025 battery anything previously seen. As our recent review shows, it's actually a solid laptop as well, with good performance and battery life, and a few noteworthy features, such as Beats Audio and an NFC antenna for connection to mobile phones.

The Spectre is certainly not the first unique laptop design we've seen, but many of the models that break the mold visually do so at the expense of performance, battery life, or just plain usability. Some of these designs are just too esoteric to ever catch on with a mainstream audience, such as the dual touch screens (and no keyboard) on the Acer Iconia. Other times, a AS10B75 risk-taking new design is highly hyped, and released to much fanfare, only to be gateway mx8716b battery quickly dropped by the company responsible for it when it doesn't take off right away. It's always a shame when a product such as the Dell Adamo XPS doesn't get a chance to find its audience (and ironically, the currently hot ultrabook category owes a design debt to the Adamo XPS and the original Adamo model that preceded it).

In this roundup, we've collected some of the most inventive laptop designs of the past few years, along with our impressions of what worked, and what didn't for each one. None of the older systems went on to be major hits, sometimes because of design, but other times, due to gateway mx6030 battery performance and price. Time will tell if the AS10B7E new HP Spectre (and the Razer Blade, our other current pick) will beat the unique design curse that has kept most laptops looking fairly similar to each other for many years.

Should laptop designers stick with the basic boxlike look, or is there room for some inventiveness? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
