3M gets $4.6 million electric-car battery grant

The Obama Dell Studio 1537 AC Adapter administration has awarded $4.6 million to 3M Co. to develop a long-life, low-cost battery to be used in electric cars. The grant, announced Wednesday, is part of the government's effort to build Dell Studio 1535 AC Adapter more energy-efficient, environmentally friendly vehicles.
The project at the Maplewood-based Dell Studio 15 AC Adapter giant is one of 12 focused on electric car batteries. Overall, the Dell Studio 1737 AC Adapter advanced research project dispensed $175 million for 40 projects in 15 states.
These projects cover everything from electronics to

Dell Studio 1735 AC Adapter lightweight materials to better fuels, lubricants and tires that will make vehicles run more efficiently.
Last month, President Obama announced fuel-efficiency standards Acer 3680 Battery designed to have cars and light trucks get 54.5 miles per gallon of gasoline by the 2025 model year.

GM pact charges up battery maker A123

General Motors has signed a production deal with Waltham’s A123 Systems to supply lithium ion batteries for the Detroit carmaker’s future electric vehicles.
Specific brands and vehicles, which will be sold in select global markets, will be Dell Studio 17 AC Adapter announced at a future date, according to GM, which did not disclose terms of the deal.
A123, which previously had a development Dell Latitude AC Adapter contract with GM, started producing the Nanophosphate cells and integrated electronic components, at its Livonia, Mich., plant in late 2010.
“This has the potential for us to be anywhere from Dell Vostro AC Adapter thousands to tens of thousands of (battery) packs per year,” A123 spokesman Dan Borgasano said. “That depends on how many markets they’re going into, how many they make and the Dell LA90PS0-00 AC Adapter demand for the cars. It’s definitely a milestone for A123.”
The Livonia plant went online Dell pa-10 AC Adapter last summer as the largest lithium battery manufacturing facility in North America, with the Dell PA-1900-02D AC Adapter capacity to produce batteries for 30,000 cars per year.
“This (GM contact) could be a $75 million to $100 million piece of Dell pa-21 AC Adapter business at 5,000 car units a year, if they could get to that level,” said analyst Robert Brown of Craig-Hallum Capital in Minneapolis.
Shares of A123 climbed 45 percent Dell pa-12 AC Adapter yesterday to $4.60 after surging as much as 49 percent — the most since September 2009.
The company had said in February that it had been awarded a ASUS A2000L AC Adapter production contract with a “major North American automaker” for a new electric car expected to hit the market next year. It said the gateway NV59C battery contract would be a “significant” contributor to revenue from 2013 to 2015 once the “high-volume” program scaled production.

10 treated after exposure to powder in Covington

Police have determined that an incident that sent 10 people to the hospital Friday morning from a plant in Covington resulted from the accidental release of a 3UR18650Y-2-QC236 battery chemical.
"We're getting good news, that this is not a ASUS A2000H AC Adapter contaminant, a foreign agent placed inside the battery," Covington Police Capt. Ken Malcom told Channel 2 Action News. "It was just an accident, an explosion within the contents of the battery."
The incident happened at Pure Talk, a phone Compaq M2000 AC Adapter manufacturing company on Lochridge Boulevard. Malcom said around 2:30 a.m. Friday, an employee opened a package containing batteries. Two of the batteries were fused together, and when an employee separated them, a white AS07A41 powder was released.
"This employee immediately started feeling a burning sensation on the AS07A31 hands, a numbing sensation" on the eyes and skin, Malcom said. "Immediately the other employees in the AS07A51 business began feeling similar effects of exposure to this powder."
Police were concerned that an employee reported finding a message. "It was a hand-written note on a battery, not attached to the battery, that stated, ‘You've been punked,'" Malcom said.
Police at first theorized the chemical release was a AS07A71 deliberate attack but are not so sure now. They are seeking to determine if the note was written in connection with the fused batteries or if it was a coincidence, Channel 2 reported.
Meanwhile, employees drove BTP-ARJ1 themselves to Newton Medical Center for decontamination and MS2180 treatment, Malcom said. Because the AS07A32 patients drove to the hospital, their cars had to be decontaminated as well, he said.
Linda Moseley, a spokeswoman at the hospital, said Friday morning that the BTP-AQJ1 emergency room was on lockdown due to the BTP-ANJ1 azmat situation and that patients needing treatment for other things were being diverted to nearby hospitals.
The emergency room reopened late GARDA31 Friday afternoon, Channel 2 reported.
Ryan Deal, spokesman for the Georgia Department of LC.BTP01.017 Public Health, told the AJC that the suspicious chemical would be BT.00803.015 tested at the Georgia Public Health Lab. He said he BATBL50L8H expected a sample to arrive later Friday and that testing would typically take six to 24 hours, depending on what the substance is.
He said it was "far too early" to speculate on what the 3ur18650f-2-qc175 powder could be but that there are "a number of powders and allergens and things of that nature that would cause the types of 3UR18650F-3-QC228 reactions" experienced by the Covington patients.
If the powder turns out to be benign, he said, investigators on the scene might be able to make that determination.

Johnson Controls engineer explains new battery technology to president

President Barack Obama returned to lc.btp00.001 Holland 13 months after attending a battery plant groundbreaking to tour another battery plant already in operation.
And Johnson Controls aspire 3935 battery senior engineer Anthony Pacheco gave him the inside look.
Although Obama’s appearance itself was groundbreaking last July, his hp pavilion dv4000 charger return Thursday had more of a getting-down-to-business feel.
Obama toured the Johnson Controls lithium-ion 3UR18650Y-2-QC261 battery plant, seeing the progress of the industry for himself.
“It is great that we can show the president what we are AS09B56 doing and the jobs we are creating,” Pacheco told The Sentinel after guiding the 4UR18650F-2-QC218 president through the plant.
“It was very exciting to be able to show him real LC.BTP01.013 product,” said Pacheco, who worked at the Holland plant for several years before transferring to the Milwaukee facility. “I explained one of the battery packs and talked about the Ford Transit Connect Electric. ... It’s not like these are out of AS07B32 science fiction anymore. They are on the road.”
Having the opportunity to participate in the tour AS07B31 was even more meaningful to Pacheco on a personal level: “I got to shake his ASUS A32-F3 battery hand and had my photo taken with him. Obviously, he’s the biggest celebrity I’ve ever met.”
Obama toured the 4UR18650F-1-QC192 facility before his speech to a crowd of about 200.
“Very cool,” Obama commented as Johnson Control employee John Park demonstrated an automatic storage and retrieval frame used to assemble the advanced batteries.
