Lenovo asks for laptop, battery that exploded injuring man

Two days after the battery of a Lenovo 5030 laptop exploded, severely injuring a 21-year-old in the dv8000 battery eyes, a senior Lenovo official told Newsline that investigations on the accident could not commence till the remains of the laptop and battery were given to the company.
We are waiting for all the dv1000 battery circumstantial evidence to start our investigations. The remains of the laptop and the battery are crucial to ascertain whether the battery was a genuine Lenovo product. Ninety per cent of batteries sold are from the grey market, said Poonam Kaul, Director of Corporate Communications, Lenovo-India.
On Sunday, the battery of Monu Kumars Lenovo laptop hp pavilion dv4000 battery burst when he was trying to remove it.
Kaul said the accident could not be linked to the series of explosions of the BL-5C battery models reported in 2007, though Kumars battery was also of the same make.
The 5030 Lenovo dv5000 battery laptop was introduced in March 2009, while the incidents of hp pavilion dv2000 battery overheating were reported in 2007 there is absolutely no link between the two, said Kaul.
The mobile laptop maker had issued a hp pavillion dv8000 battery product advisory in 2007, withdrawing certain batches of the BL-5C battery, after approximately 100 incidents of overheating were reported globally.
The advisory was not a recall it was a mere advise issued before Lenovo completed its investigations and found the batteries were counterfeits, said Kaul.

Kumars family members said they will file a case against Lenovo in the consumer court on Wednesday. His cousin, Ravinder Kumar, said the companys response is insufficient.
No senior Lenovo representative has contacted us let alone tendering an apology. Two people came on hp pavilion dv1000 battery Monday and clicked pictures of the damaged laptop, Ravinder said.
According to him, Kumar has the bills and warranty letter from hp HSTNN-IB20 battery Lenovo to prove that the laptop and the hp HSTNN-OB20 battery were genuine. He said an official from Lenovo had called him on Tuesday and asked for the damaged laptop.
Is this the way to handle such a EX942AA situation? They expect me to go and just hand over the laptop on the EV087AA basis of a laptop call? Are they not entitled to take some responsibility when my brother is suffering like this?, said Ravinder. He has filed a complaint on Lenovos helpline number about the accident.
The battery had exploded less than 432974-001 battery a minute after Kumar took it out to check why his laptop 434674-001 would not switch on, despite 20 minutes of charging. He was admitted at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, and discharged on Monday.
He said he cant see at all from his left eye and that the vision in his right eye is blurred.
